Raga Alhaiya Bilaval Haiku

Ponderous, elegiac,
swaying, swaying, sawing down
to the very heart.

– Leonard "Sarangi" Blumfeld

Written while listening to Ram Narayan play this raga on the sarangi.

I love Alhaiya Bilaval - its structure and emphasis on higher notes is inherently pleasant for our Western ears, but it's still so complex and Narayan gives it a serious, worthy treatment on the Nimbus CD.

Hi~ Liked your haiku, especially "sawing down to the very heart" which is how music moves us. I'm not clear on your use of the word "ponderous," though. Heavy? I followed your links and heard Narayan play "Jog" on the sarangi: staccato, minor key--yes, elegiac. Thank you for introducing me to something new! I remember years ago listenng to Ravi Shankar on the sitar...
